Student Sections:
IMarEST Student Sections are a new initiative to support student members of the IMarEST at universities, colleges and academies around the world.
With help from a local IMarEST branch, and access to funding for activities on campus, Student Sections aim to expand knowledge, share career advice, develop skills and provide networking opportunities to IMarEST Student Members during and after their studies.
Three reasons to start an IMarEST Student Section!
- Broaden your knowledge - Creating and running an IMarEST Student Section is a great way to develop your knowledge of the marine industry. By working with your local branch you can attend events and host lectures by leading experts in a variety of marine related fields, attend networking events where you can meet marine professionals, arrange careers talks with IMarEST members to learn more about marine careers and more!
- Gain valuable skills for your CV - You will also have the opportunity to gain valuable experience on the committee, whether this be practical experience in web editing - where you will liaise with our in-house IT department to create your bespoke student section webpage - or administrative and financial experience as the committee secretary, there are a number of opportunities to expand your CV and prepare yourself for the world of work. By holding CV writing workshops and mock interview sessions you can ensure you and your Student Section is well prepared for the post-graduation job hunt.
- Expand your network - Being a part of a Student Section gives you the opportunity to meet like-minded people, to support one another throughout your studies through study sessions and student paper nights where you can present your research to your peers and get valuable feedback. You could organise group field trips to conferences and events (we all know how daunting a room full of strangers can be!), or visit your local shipyard, marina or port. The people you meet in your student section may even be able to continue to offer support and advice throughout your marine career.
