Annual Conference 2020 - Naval Engineers: Supporting a Sustainable Blue Economy

IMarEST TV recording from the 13th July 2020 IMarEST Annual Conference Naval Engineers: Supporting a Sustainable Blue Economy, presented by Matt Bolton, Chairman, Naval Engineering Special Interest Group IMarEST and 38-year career as a Marine Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy with Professor Cat Savage, Member, Naval Engineering SIG and UK MoD Chair of Naval Architecture at University College London since April 2017.

About the session

From working towards greater energy efficiency, to ensuring the security of sea trade routes and offshore energy infrastructure, naval engineers need to be focussed on adapting to the changing environment, both ecological and political, and innovating to answer the challenges these changes bring.

At a strategic level we need to address how the maritime enterprise becomes more sustainable as an entire ecosystem within an ever more demanding budgetary environment. As engineers, we inherently want to solve problems but alongside this the industry needs to be further incentivised to work collaboratively and take advantage of technology transfer.

This presentation will discuss how we need to adapt to, and support, a sustainable blue economy from the perspective of the naval engineering community.

About IMarEST Annual Conference

The IMarEST Annual Conference 2020 is being held as a flexible two-week virtual event

Building on last year’s inaugural event, the 2020 Annual Conference will feature multiple streams covering many of the hottest topics in the marine realm, from the challenges of decarbonisation and a wider shift to greener, more sustainable ways of operating to developments in the naval sector and the outlook for autonomous systems.

Over the course of two weeks, we will utilise a mixture of live formats – webinars, live debates, 1-2-1 talks with experts, and panel discussions - to provide delegates a flexible and unrivalled opportunity to participate in debates, to learn about subjects outside their day-to-day work, and to make new professional connections.

Although the change to a virtual format was made primarily in response to Covid-19, it will allow international members who ordinarily would be unable to travel to London and attend in person to fully take part in proceedings and bring a global voice to the event.

To maximise interaction and engagement, we encourage all delegates to download our new event app, which will help you keep track of what’s happening when, take part in live polls, access supporting content and network with other participants and sponsors.
