IMarEST launches Naval Engineering Special Interest Group

The first ever IMarEST Annual Conference also saw the official launch of a new Special Interest Group focused on naval engineering (NESIG). Founding chair, Captain Matt Bolton, Royal Navy, outlined planned activities cutting across a variety of disciplines such as marine engineering and combat and platform systems, and across a breadth of sectors such as the military, coastguard and support ships. The group will aim to ensure that developing IMO and other intergovernmental regulations recognise military and security needs while exploring technology needs and solutions to underpin the effectiveness and sustainability of navies and coastguards.

The SIG will build on the success of IMarEST’s naval Learned Society Events over the last 30 years by creating a community of common interest in naval engineering that will share knowledge and develop professionalism globally.

The group intends to organise international conferences, exhibitions and events to share knowledge, resolve issues, promote best practice and uncover emerging technical needs and put forward potential solutions. It will look to prepare joint sector postions on current IMO and other intergovernmental debates. It is also keen to come up with ways for recognising and rewarding exellence in naval engineering.

The NESIG will also work closely with the Technical Advisory Committees of the following IMarEST conferences: International Naval Engineering Conference, International Ship Control Systems Symposium, Marine Electrical and Control Systems Safety Conference, and Engine As A Weapon.
