IMarEST partners with Marecamp Association

The IMarEST is delighted to announce its partnership with Marecamp Association to promote marine mammal research, improve the sustainability of small-scale fisheries and to provide opportunities to engage in ocean activities for disadvantaged people in Catania, Italy.

Marecamp is a voluntary association that runs a series of educational, ecotourism and outreach activities that aim to be socially inclusive.

The association focuses its activities on marine protected species and their interactions with small-scale fisheries, utilising the experience of both federal instructors and marine biologists with years of experience, to support the research on cetaceans in the Sicilian waters.

It runs a number of scientific research projects and environmental training courses in theoretical and practical marine biology in the region, while also partnering with universities to offer workshops and internships on cetaceans.

The partnership between the IMarEST and Marecamp will help to further the conservation of marine mammals through collaboration with the IMarEST Marine Mammals Special Interest Group (SIG) and aims to improve the sustainability of fisheries in the Sicilian region with the support of the IMarEST Global Fisheries Improvements SIG.

The IMarEST’s NGO Partnership scheme is open to all non-governmental organisations operating in the marine science and conservation sector and supports capacity building and professional development through access to complimentary membership benefits, knowledge-sharing, online promotion and free membership for volunteers. They are designed to help support the work of NGOs to positively contribute towards the delivery of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (in particular SDG14 Life Below Water).
