INEC/ iSCSS 2020 preview

October’s International Naval Engineering Conference and International Ship Control Systems Symposium offer the chance to hear from world-leading speakers.

October’s International Naval Engineering Conference and International Ship Control Systems Symposium offer the chance to hear from world-leading speakers and take part in not-to-be-missed presentations and panel discussions – all online.

This year’s INEC and iSCSS conferences (5 October to Friday 9 October) will be a little different. Due to COVID-19 they are, of course, taking place virtually.

But what is the same is that both events, the cornerstone of the naval engineering calendar, offer a series of mixed-format panel discussions and presentations from leading figures in the naval engineering and ship control systems communities. There will be international representation from navies, commercial and military ship operators, designers, shipbuilders, classification societies, equipment manufacturers, and universities.

INEC 2020’s chair, Cdre Stuart Henderson RN, told Marine Professional, that the virtual format has “opened up opportunities for greater reach and engagement.

“More people have signed up this year than for any of our previous events, and we’ll have more than 90 papers for INEC and around 20 papers for iSCSS. It is a real success given the disruption that’s been caused to technical developments and the academic world over the last few months.

“It’s also very encouraging that around a third of the papers have come in from younger authors, thanks to the Gosling Award, which gives authors 35 years old or under the opportunity to present their ideas and innovations to an influential worldwide audience, with prizes on offer of up to £5,000.”

  • INEC’s keynote speakers will be Vice Admiral Arie Jan de Waard, Sarah Kenny (BMT), Rear Admiral Lorin C. Selby, and Rear Admiral Paul Marshall CBE RN
  • The INEC first sessions on 5 Oct after the keynote opening session are on disruptive technologies and climate change response

iSCSS: Surfing The Digital Revolution

Meanwhile, the International Ship Control Systems Symposium (iSCSS) 2020 will focus on the rapid development of new technologies and the impact they will have on future control system strategies for naval and commercial ships.

“The theme of this year’s symposium is Surfing The Digital Revolution,” explained iSCSS 2020’s chair, Cdre Rinze Geertsma RNLN.

“We have a very interesting program lined up which will provide the latest academic and industrial developments on autonomous systems and autonomous shipping, including the results of the first collaborative autonomous shipping experiments, which will be executed virtually by world leading research institutes on ship autonomy.

“We will also discuss the latest developments in power system controls and their application in recent ship programs and investigate the challenges that increasing dependency on ship control gives us, particularly in regard to cyber security and combat management systems.”

“Last, but not least,” said Lt Cdr Rinze Geertsma RNLN, we will give insights on how the big data that control systems can be used to reduce energy consumption and costs, and improve system availability through predictive and data-driven maintenance.”

The first iSCSS session, Power Systems 2, is on 6 October.

What to expect from INEC/iSCSS

The 90-minute panel sessions – which will all include audience questions – will be chaired by technical advisory committee members and broadcast live on IMarEST TV and via the Zoom platform.

An event app will also be available to provide participants with access to all conference content and the ability to network virtually with other delegates.
