LECTURE: British Warship Propulsion Developments 1945 to 1990

IMarEST TV recording by the Midlands Branch on the 26th October 2022. This webinar was presented by William Harris, formerly of the Royal Navy.

This presentation covers the catch-up deemed necessary instead of propulsion technology in the light of World War II experience and its further development in regard to efficiency improvements and the automation of operation. At the same time, the development of the marine gas turbine and other propulsion technologies followed leading to the displacement of steam power by gas turbines and diesel engines in the 1970s and 1980s with an account of subsequent developments to improve efficiency and reliability and reduce underwater noise transmission.

About the Speaker

Mr William Harris is a former Naval Marine Engineer who was involved in the design of the Canadian Patrol Frigate, the Type 23 Frigate and in the dockyard support of ships and submarines, as well as being a seagoing marine engineer during a 35-year career in the Royal Navy.
