LECTURE: Introduction to Geothermal Energy
IMarEST TV recording by the East of England Branch on the 26th April 2022. This webinar was presented by Richard Jenkins of CeraPhi Energy.
As the UK and the rest of the world moves away from carbon intensive energy sources there is growing interest in the potential of geothermal to be part of the zero-carbon energy mix. Geothermal energy can be derived from a number of sources; from ground-source heating and cooling which utilises absorption of heat from solar energy, to deep geothermal which taps into the conducted heat from the earth’s core. This presentation looks at the various technologies that can be deployed to provide heat and power from geothermal sources, and considers the potential for greatly increasing the exploitation of this clean, always available, energy.
About the Speaker
Richard Jenkins has over 30 years background in the energy sector, primarily in oil & gas but also in offshore wind. He initially trained as a marine engineer cadet. He now works for CeraPhi Energy, a company specialising in the development of deep geothermal energy projects. He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. In his spare time Richard enjoys motorsports and competes in a national series with his own racing car.
