LECTURE: New Lloyd's Technical Director - Women's Facilities in Shipyards
IMarEST TV recording by the Western Australia Branch on the 22nd March 2023. This lecture was presented by Claudene Sharpe-Patel and Joanna Mycroft of Lloyd's Register.
This presentation provides an insight into the Technical Director role at Lloyd's Register, a unique role supporting the development of rules and regulations and working with teams supporting IMO, IACS and flag states. It also analyses and discusses the results of a study carried out by Lloyd's Register on gender equality in maritime workspaces, providing conclusions and opening the issue into the wider marine community.
About the Speakers
Claudene Sharpe-Patel commenced her professional seagoing career as an Engineering Cadet with BHP in 1992 at AMC and achieved her Chief Engineer Combined COC (Steam & Motor) in 2002. She then embarked upon a career in marine engineering in Australia and overseas, culminating in her recent appointment as Technical Director of Lloyd's Register Group, based in Southampton, UK. Claudene is a Fellow of the IMarEST.
Joanna Mycroft is a Senior Surveyor and Naval Architect who has been working with Lloyd’s Register for 11 years. Starting off in Structural Rule Development, she moved to Plan Approval and now works as an Existing Ship Surveyor. During her time as a surveyor, she has worked in the Netherlands, Australia and Singapore and has seen a variety of conditions at sites around the world. This has led to a recent campaign looking at the facilities available to women in shipyards and manufacturing sites and how this can affect careers long term. She will be talking about the campaign and the statistics that have been found from the research done so far.
