Overview of the 73rd session of the Marine Environmental Protection Committee and IMarEST engagement

The IMarEST contributes to the work of the IMO Marine Environmental Committee (MEPC) as part of the technical leadership strategic goals. The MEPC addresses environmental issues within the remit of the IMO, in particular the IMarEST has an interest in matters relating to ship-source pollution covered by the MARPOL treaty, emissions from ships, including air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, ballast water management and anti-fouling systems, and, pollution preparedness and response.

The MEPC held its 73rd session from 22-26 October 2018, additionally in the week preceding the session, an intersessional meeting of the Working Group on Reduction of Greenhouse Gases from Ships (ISWG-GHG) was held to discuss the initial developments of the emissions strategy approved at the last session of the MEPC. 

This report provides a summary of the key discussions and outcomes of these meetings together with an overview of the IMarEST’s engagement in the work of this Committee and will discuss;
