President's Lecture 2023

IMarEST TV recording of the President's Lecture 2023.

In this special lecture, the IMarEST's 120th President, Martin Shaw, gives a presentation on commercial shipping operations and the changes that have taken place over the past half century.

It is clear that the considerable change that ship operations have undergone in the past half century is not lessening and the increasing complexity and interconnectedness means that change is coming quicker and with less notice. This presentation analyses the historic changes since the 1970s, their causes and the result. It looks at the cycle of change and how each change leads to further change.

It also explores at-present shipping operations and the challenges of operating ships today. Furthermore, this presentation covers future challenges, including the net zero challenge and issues to do with digitalisation and autonomous shipping.
