Sri Lanka Branch Technical Visit
Yet another highly productive field trip to Lakvijaya (Norochcholai) Power plant was successfully completed on 27 May 2023. The tour commenced at the Marine House, with 51 participants which included 48 Marine Engineering Cadets and their trainees from all the maritime institutes and three committee members of IMarEST, Sri Lanka Branch (Mr Palitha Bandara, Mr Thilan Costa, Mr Sanjeewe Jayathilake). The idea for this field trip originated with Mr Palitha Bandara and the tour was organised by the leadership of Mr Ernest Weerawardena, Mr Tilan Costa and Mr Gayan Perera. Not to forget the contribution of Mr Roshan Fernando with back office work and financials and the ever-supporting Chairman Rear Ad Ravi Ranasinghe.
All participants acquired first-hand information of the following areas:
- Project Initiation of Phase 1 and phase 2 which included owners, equipment manufacturers, component details, finantial commitments and project life cycle.
- Fuel handling system which included coal transport system, coal pulverisering system, auto diesel startup system and coal burning system.
- Boiler operation and steam cycle which include superheat steam header, tangential firing system, high pressure turbine and reheat system, low pressure turbine and condenser, and feed water system.
- Flue gas desulfurization system
- Electrostatic Precipitator which removes about 15 ton/hour, fly ash from each 300MW plant.
IMarEST Sri Lanka Branch hope the vast knowledge participants gained by this field trip will help them to further their studies in Marine Engineering.
