Synopsis
This technical talk and presentation will provide an overview of the various opportunities today to comply with 2020 sulphur cap IMO requirements.
Particular attention will pay to alternative fuels and hybrid power solutions available in the market, taking into considerations, not only the upcoming sulphur cap requirements in force starting 1 January 2020, but also − beyond such tight deadline − the IMO requirements to cut GHG emissions by 50% by 2050 compared to the levels in 2008.
The IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee Seventy-Fourth session (MEPC 74) held on May 2019 will be considered. Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (LSFO) would be the immediate solution to implement onboard ships sailing these days. Hence, LSFO quality assurance is something to be especially regarded. Scrubbers is another option with some possible limitations. Besides these two most common solutions nowadays, several alternative fuel applications will be mentioned more in-depth as related to mainly cruise ships and tugs. Several hybrid propulsion systems with battery power for ro-ro ships and ferries will be examined regarding the latest ongoing projects.
Sulphur limit is not enough to cut GHG emissions, but a holistic approach optimising the energy consumption has to be taken.
