WEBINAR: Physical testing of a quick connection system for floating renewables
IMarEST TV recording by the Aberdeen Maritime Joint Branch on the 14th September 2022. This webinar was presented by Nigel Robinson of Apollo Offshore Engineering.
For the past three years, Apollo has been developing a quick connection system (QCS) for floating offshore renewable energy devices. Known as “The PALM”, the device facilitates the mooring and electrical hookup and disconnection operations, drawing on the experience of the floating production and tidal sectors. In spring this year, a milestone was achieved with the successful marine testing of a prototype. This was the culmination of a programme of design development and physical demonstration, funded by Wave Energy Scotland and the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership. In this presentation, the project director reviews the evolution of the design, the in-water programme and Apollo’s plans for pre-commercial deployment.
About the Speaker
Nigel Robinson is Apollo Offshore Engineering’s Sustainable Energy Director, where he heads up a portfolio of engineering services across the wind, wave, tidal and hydrogen sectors. Nigel’s career experience encompasses technical and commercial leadership roles in the UK and overseas. As a practicing engineer, he has supported a broad range of offshore structures and floating assets, always from a maritime perspective. In recent years he has been increasingly involved with offshore renewables, including the development of Apollo’s PALM Quick Connection System. In line with Apollo's motto, Nigel is very much "passionate about engineering" and even more so about a sustainable energy future.
